Creating Skills: Agent Workflows Instead of One-Off Prompts
A well-written skill beats ten ad-hoc prompts. How system prompt, tools, and quality standards become a reusable team asset.
A prompt is an idea. A skill is a tool. That distinction decides whether AI work lives in individual heads or in your team repository.
What a Skill Is
A skill bundles three things in one place:
- A system prompt defining role, purpose, and limits.
- Tools the skill may access - file system, database, HTTP client, internal API.
- A quality standard defining what counts as "done".
What a skill is not: a fancy prompt in a Notion page. Versioning is the key. A skill lives in Git, has a history, can be reviewed and rolled back.
Why This Changes Daily Work
We see three concrete effects regularly:
- Reproducibility. Two colleagues produce comparable results on the same task.
- Reviewability. Pull requests on skills enable real discussion - unlike "whose prompt was better".
- Delegation to agents. A skill a human uses today can be invoked automatically by an agent tomorrow.
An Example from Our Own Work
Our timetrack skill reads Git commits, reconciles them with project rules, and posts time entries to TimeCockpit. Before: manual reconciliation, five to ten minutes daily, error-prone. After: one command, two follow-up questions, entries posted. The decisive factor was not the language model but the structured skill around it - with explicit project rules in .claude/TIMECOCKPIT.md and clear success criteria.
From One-Off Prompt to Team Asset
Three questions help distil existing prompts into skill candidates:
- Is this prompt used more than three times a month?
- Does it need context that does not change every time?
- Is there a clear success check ("done means X")?
Three yeses, and investing in a real skill is almost always worth it - for humans on the team today, for agents tomorrow.
